Just Start

E. M. Forster, summed up the writer’s condition this way: “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?” This is one of the ways I knew I was a writer. I think about many things, and putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as it may be) helps me sort those things out. Sometimes the stuff I write even means something to somebody else, and I’m still filled with wonder and gratitude when anything I have to say touches anyone.

I’ve been talking about starting a blog for a long time. I mean a long time. Like such a long time that I had fooled myself into believing that talking about it was the same thing as doing something about it. (For the record, it’s not the same thing.)

I said a lot of things to myself about why I couldn’t start. I don’t have time, I said. I don’t have a topic, I said. I don’t have an audience, I said. I don’t have a website, I said.

Then, eventually, over all that noise, I heard myself say something different.

Just start, I said. Anywhere is fine, I said, but just start.

So, I did. I started to make time. I started a website. I started planning more posts and topics. I don’t have everything figured out about what I’ll be writing and who I’ll be writing to and how long and often I’ll be doing this... But starting somewhere now is better than starting somewhere later. It's a start.
